Codes, Testing & Compliance

International Building Code (IBC) – 2006–2024

The International Building Code establishes minimum requirements for building safety, including fire protection, structural integrity, and material performance. Compliance across multiple IBC editions confirms DragonBoard® is suitable for use in a wide range of commercial, residential, and mixed-use construction.

Fire Performance

ASTM E84 – Surface Burning Characteristics

Evaluates flame spread and smoke development when fire travels across the surface of a material and is used to assess interior finish fire performance.

ASTM E136 – Noncombustibility

Determines whether a material ignites, burns, or contributes fuel when exposed to high temperatures. Passing this test confirms DragonBoard® is classified as a noncombustible material.

ASTM E119 – Fire-Resistance of Assemblies

Evaluates the ability of wall, floor, roof, and shaft assemblies to withstand fire exposure for a prescribed duration while maintaining structural integrity and limiting heat transfer.

UL 2-Hour Fire-Rated Assemblies (UL G575, UL U055)

UL-listed wall and floor assemblies incorporating DragonBoard® that have been tested and certified to meet 2-hour fire-resistance ratings recognized by building officials and authorities having jurisdiction.

UL Certification – BZXX.R22189 (US) / CERZC.R22189 (CAN)

Indicates DragonBoard® is independently evaluated and certified by UL for compliance with applicable fire and safety standards in the United States and Canada.

Structural Performance

ASTM E72 – Structural Strength and Stiffness

Evaluates panel and assembly performance under transverse and axial loads to verify flexural strength, stiffness, and deflection characteristics. Results demonstrate DragonBoard®’s high flexural strength and low deflection relative to conventional gypsum-based panels.

ASTM E564 – Racking and Shear Resistance

Measures the in-plane shear strength and racking resistance of wall assemblies subjected to lateral loads such as wind and seismic forces. Testing confirms DragonBoard® performs effectively as structural wall sheathing and a bracing element when properly fastened.

ASTM E455 – Diaphragm Performance

Evaluates the in-plane shear strength and stiffness of floor and roof diaphragm assemblies to resist lateral loads imposed by wind and seismic activity.

ASTM C1185 – Flexural Strength

Measures the bending strength and load-carrying capacity of panels, demonstrating resistance to cracking, breakage, and excessive deflection.

ASTM D5628 – Impact Resistance

Assesses resistance to impact damage, indicating durability and suitability for high-traffic or abuse-prone applications.

Acoustical Performance

Sound Transmission Class (STC) up to 59 and impact insulation class (IIC) up to 64 in assembly.

ASTM E90 – Airborne Sound Transmission

Measures the ability of wall and floor assemblies to reduce airborne sound transmission and provides the basis for Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings.

ASTM E492 – Impact Sound Transmission

Evaluates the ability of floor-ceiling assemblies to reduce structure-borne impact noise, such as footfall, contributing to Impact Insulation Class (IIC) ratings.

Durability & Health

ASTM G21 – Mold Resistance

Evaluates resistance to fungal growth under controlled conditions, confirming suitability for use in humid or moisture-prone environments.

Material Composition

DragonBoard® contains no asbestos, no added formaldehyde, and no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), supporting improved indoor air quality.

UL-Certified Fire Rating

System STC Sound Rating

"For our latest mid-rise project in New York City, we needed a structural subfloor that didn't just meet code but exceeded it. DragonBoard’s UL-certified, noncombustible panels made the qualification process seamless because they provide all the necessary ASTM E84 and NFPA 285 documentation upfront. Achieving a 2-hour fire rating and an STC 59 sound rating with a single product allowed us to maintain a high-performance design without the complexity of multiple layers. It is a relief to specify a product that is 100% Silica, VOC, and Asbestos-free, ensuring a healthier environment for both our installers and future residents."

"DragonBoard is a strategic partner, not just a supplier. By collaborating early in the design phase, they optimize cost and weight while providing a single-source solution from prototyping to high-volume production. Stop being treated like an 'order number'—switch to a responsive partner that delivers technical precision and streamlined results."

Superior Protection. Zero Toxins.
